Meet the Artist

My name is Raquel Roth and I’m an acrylic artist living in beautiful Halifax, Nova Scotia. Colour excites me and serves as creative inspiration for my cheerful, bold and whimsical pieces. There’s something magical about how pigments of different colours interact to produce the most luscious, and sometimes unexpected, hues. I think that’s why I am primarily drawn to florals since there are so many variations of shades, tints and tones that can describe the many variety of flowers. I am amazed at the range of emotions that art can evoke and I love sharing the joy I feel when I am painting. It definitely motivates me to keep creating art so that I can share those moments again and again, one painting at a time.

Raquel Roth

Raquel Roth is a Halifax based acrylic artist and is also a dental clinical instructor at Dalhousie University. Originally from Trinidad, she is inspired by bold colours and the beauty of natural elements, especially florals. She attributes this largely to the vibrancy of island life and participating, at a young age, in its’ yearly Carnival celebrations. She is a juried Active member of the Canadian Federation of Artists. Raquel’s paintings have found wonderful forever homes in both private and public collections in Canada, the United States and England. She is grateful to be able to share her joy of painting through her creations.

ARTIST STATEMENT
It’s a daunting process to “start” one’s art career relatively late in life. Instead of art school, I went to dental school and practiced for many years as a dental clinician. After starting a family, I decided to change my lifestyle to allow more time at home and so I made the big decision to give up a private practice and instead teach dentistry part-time at the local University. I was able to take an introductory course to acrylics a few years ago and have loved the sense of peacefulness and accomplishment that I get in front of the easel ever since. I feel fortunate to have found a few fellow female artists locally, that have graciously mentored me through the process of being vulnerable and showing my work for others to enjoy. Through social media, I have been truly grateful for the support and encouragement I have received from the artist community. It makes me feel like part of a large welcoming family and gives me the confidence to experiment and to spread my artistic “wings.”
